This issue commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of Milan Rastislav Štefánik.
Milan Rastislav Štefánik (1880–1919) was a scientist, military pilot, diplomat and Minister of War for Czechoslovakia, and is one of the most important figures in Slovak history. As diplomat, he drew attention to the difficult position of Slovaks in the then Kingdom of Hungary and promoted the idea of a common state for Czechs and Slovaks. Štefánik was one of the leading members of the foreign-based resistance movement known as the Czechoslovak National Council, which was instrumental in establishing the first Czechoslovak Republic.
Designed by Peter Valach, the obverse features a portrait of Milan Rastislav Štefánik. To the left of the portrait are the dates of Štefánik’s birth ‘1880’ and death ‘1919’.
